Luang Prabang is one of province of Laos is divided in to two parts by Mekong River. People in the two side travel to each other by barges.
The barges transportation everyday starts since early morning around 06:00 am and ends about 18.00 pm. Everyday from early morning to evening, the two barges carry people and vehicles from one side to another, are about 30 round per day. Because the central of the town is in the other side, so people need to cross for working, selling, shopping, visiting and etc. by using these barges.
To cross the Mekong River by The barges from one side to another takes about 10 minutes but indeed it take time more than 20 minutes to take off because the barges owner team need to organize all the vehicles in order to
contain vehicles as much as they can to fit with the barges space. In the barges there are space for cars, motorbikes and around the barges there are some bench for people can site around.
Every day at the port is very busy from early morning to the evening, to support the people in both sides. this place is not different from the bus station. Cars are parking very long queue on the bank at the port waiting to get into the barge. when the barge from other side arrives, it takes about 15 minutes of finish moving all vehicles out and more 15 minutes to let the car on the bank move in and organize all the car in order.
The barge price per time: small car is 30.000kip, Van is 40.000 kip, Motorbike is 10.000 kip.
Visitors who will go to Luang Prabang and plan to visit the Green Jungle Park (Tad Hoi Koua) need to use this way because the Green Jungle Park is not at the main land of Luang Prabang but it’s in the other side of the Mekong river.
We went to visit Green Jungle Park in December 2020, to cross the Mekong River by using the barge. While the Barge was driving in the middle of the Mekong river, the view around is very fantastic. in the Morning with the foggy view and evening with the sunset view. Anyone to visit Luang Prabang don’t hesitate to touch the fantastic atmosphere on the barge.
